WHAT IS A STUDENT VISA (SUBCLASS 500)

The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to study full-time at an approved institution in Australia.

You must be enrolled in a registered course and receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) before applying.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

To apply for this visa, you must:

  • Have a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement
  • Show proof of sufficient funds
  • Meet English language requirements (IELTS or equivalent)
  • Have valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
  • Meet health and character requirements

GENUINE STUDENT (GS) REQUIREMENT

Applicants must demonstrate that they are genuinely intending to study in Australia.

This includes explaining:

  • Why you chose the course

  • Your academic and career plans

The GS requirement has replaced the earlier GTE requirement.

PROOF OF FUNDS

You must show that you can cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Living expenses
  • Travel costs

Financial evidence must be genuine and sufficient for your stay.

WHILE STUDYING IN AUSTRALIA

Students must:

  • Stay enrolled in a registered course
  • Maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • Follow visa conditions

WORK RIGHTS

Student visa holders are generally allowed to:

  • Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods
  • Work full-time during scheduled breaks
