WHAT IS A STUDENT VISA (SUBCLASS 500)
The Student Visa (Subclass 500) allows international students to study full-time at an approved institution in Australia.
You must be enrolled in a registered course and receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) before applying.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
To apply for this visa, you must:
- Have a valid Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
- Meet the Genuine Student (GS) requirement
- Show proof of sufficient funds
- Meet English language requirements (IELTS or equivalent)
- Have valid Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)
- Meet health and character requirements

- Your academic and career plans
The GS requirement has replaced the earlier GTE requirement.
PROOF OF FUNDS
You must show that you can cover:
- Tuition fees
- Living expenses
- Travel costs
Financial evidence must be genuine and sufficient for your stay.
WHILE STUDYING IN AUSTRALIA
Students must:
- Stay enrolled in a registered course
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress
- Follow visa conditions
WORK RIGHTS
Student visa holders are generally allowed to:
- Work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods
- Work full-time during scheduled breaks
